From vdschoor at internode.on.net Wed Jan 2 10:21:41 2013 From: vdschoor at internode.on.net (Van Der Schoor) Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2013 21:21:41 +1100 Subject: [Bulletins] Commissioning Service Message-ID: <77746DC65818458EB0E6A15DDC07A074@Peter> Dear editors and pastors It would be great if this Sunday your congregation could join in prayer for Dr Simon and Mrs Ana Burggraaf as they are "set apart" by our denomination for mission service in Solomon Islands. Simon's appointment as Director of our mission is an answer to prayer, and Ana's skills and enthusiasm are so complementary! Please insert this announcement in your newsletters too. Thanks, with Christian greetings, Peter van der Schoor OUR MISSIONARIES Today, in the South Barwon Christian Reformed Church in Victoria, DR. SIMON BURGGRAAF, with his wife Ana, will be commissioned and "set apart" for the special role of Director of our CRCA mission in the Solomon Islands. Simon will lead a team of missionaries- Australians, New Zealanders and indigenous Christians- who will continue the work so faithfully started by Kevin and Machi Rietveld 14 years ago. Simon as a research scientist, and Ana (nee Berends) as an occupational therapist, have expressed a deep desire to serve the Lord, and his people in that beautiful but poor place, and they bring skills of leadership, team work, teaching and training, youth work, sport and children's ministry, etc mixed with youthful energy and enthusiasm, and a sure and steady trust in their Heavenly Father. (As an amazing provision from the Lord, Ana has secured Australian Government funding to teach and train therapists- so badly needed- at the College of Higher Education in Honiara! Praise God!) Please join us in prayer, thanking God for Ana and Simon, asking for His grace and love to be their strength and motivation, asking that the training courses they are undertaking will be really helpful, and that as Ana begins in late January, and Simon a little later in February, Jehovah Jireh will be their Provider! John W From: Harry Burggraaf [mailto:harry.burggraaf at bigpond.com] Sent: Saturday, 5 January 2013 6:18 PM To: harry.burggraaf at bigpond.com Subject: Harry at end week 12 Dear family and friends, Harry has made it into the new year. We have valued your faithfulness in lovingly and prayerfully, walking alongside us, for these , now 12 weeks. The chest drain to relieve the plueral effusion was able to be removed last Sunday, when we also had the speech therapist do her first assessment for a trial with a speech valve. But Harry's strength is not yet sufficient for this. It will take some practice to exercise all those throat muscles that have not been in use for such a long time. Speech therapy has not occurred again, due to Harry becoming septic and having another internal bleed on Monday morning. He required 3 bags of blood and a pack of platelets. He was put back on antibiotics on Monday due to his high temperatures. His BP again became quite unstable. On Tuesday he was distressingly unwell and restless with the infection (I stayed with him for most of the day with Sonya relieving me) on Wednesday Harry started having small heart stoppages again, some self-correct, others require chemical correction. we haven't had these while Harry has been off antibiotics. Thursday they were increasing in frequency and I asked if they could be related to the Vancomycin. which he restarted on Monday . So he was taken off it. However Thursday we were also informed that they have isolated Methycillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) in his lungs and in his blood stream. Over these two days Harry also started to develop painful spasms especially in his left arm. they are trying to find the cause - they started after the chest was drained. So yesterday he went for a brain scan which has come back normal.. for which we are thankful. They have increased his pain relief and today an OT was looking at how to prevent contractures after being in bed for so long. The pain, the infection, the heart stoppages , have played havoc with the stability of his vital signs so he is back on the CPAP machine again. I explained to Harry today that we are going to attend Simon and Ana's commissioning service tomorrow -as Ana leaves for the Solomons on the 21st and Simon in Feb. He opened his eyes and gave me a sad gaze. I validated his look, by acknowledging that we all grieve the fact that he can't be there, but that I will represent us both, as best as I can - and that his good mate Martin will report back to him afterwards about how it went. Pray for Simon and Ana as they venture into this work and for the preparation they still need to do, that they will know God's peace and enabling. Jonathan and I will continue on to Apollo Bay to join Sonya and Cam and the children till Tuesday - Just to have a few days by the beach will be a refreshing break. I pray that Harry will stay stable in this time with other family members covering the visits on those days. Simon also will be closer, as he attends Cross -Cultural training in Belgrave. While Harry appears to follow our conversation with his very expressive eyes; the pathways to motor control on request seem quite delayed and difficult. I pray that we may see improved responses in this area and some resolution to the spasms and the muscular/skeletal pain. A teacher friend of Harry sent me this prayer: God, make me brave for life: Oh braver than this. Let me straighten after pain, as a tree straightens after the rain, Shining and lovely again. God make me brave for life; much braver than this. As the blown grass lifts, let me rise >From sorrow with quiet eyes, Knowing your way is wise. God, make me brave, life brings Such blinding things. Help me keep my sight; Help me see aright That out of dark comes light. - Author Unknown In the midst of all the set-backs of this week, I have known a peace . and had confirmation - of God using and guiding things, so thank you for your sustaining prayers, as we continue day by day, looking to God for all we need. I understand that there was a handover of roles. I am unsure as to how my contact details have ended up in this list. I am a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Casey in Victoria; the only thought that I have is that my name/number/contact details are listed within our church for the prayer chain. Apart from this one need, I have no idea how my details have made their way onto the 'bulletins at crca' mailing list, but I would prefer if it would be deleted. Dear friends and family, My preference would have been to let each one of you know personally, but that would be too time consuming and draining emotionally, so I am resorting to my usual way of communication - to let you know that Harry's earthly journey is completed. Today (Monday) at 2.00pm Harry quietly slipped away into the eternity of God's loving presence - to be at home with God. His task here is finished. For Harry, it is a release from the physical constraints that he has been experiencing since his hospitalization. For us as a family, we are overwhelmed by the loss of our loving and beloved Harry after 12 long weeks in hospital with its up and down times. But we know that these 12 weeks have also prepared us for this day. God has graciously given us these weeks to still love, support and care for Harry. As funeral and thanksgiving times, dates, places, are confirmed we will let you know by email. Pray for the comfort we need, and the ability to grieve, in the midst of our losses and as we embrace the dailyness of life in its on-goingness with all its demands. We are grateful for you travelling alongside us with prayer and love, through this journey. I hope you can accept this message as you own personal word, -for your many responses (email, SMS, phone) of loving support and prayerfulness as we grieve the loss of Harry. Today we have met with funeral directors to plan details for services for Tuesday 15th of January. This is Harry and my wedding anniversary and it seems fitting to start and finish a journey on that date. reminding me of the vows we took, to walk together in sickness and in health. A notice will also appear in tomorrow's papers. There will be a committal service at the Springvale Crematorium in the Blair chapel for the wider family (seats about 60) at 8.45 am. This is to be followed by a service of Thanksgiving and celebration for Harry's life of witness, at the Dandenong Christian Reformed Church (corner of Gladstone Rd. and Outlook Drive, Dandenong) which commences at 10.30am. Opportunities for condolences will be possible afterwards in the hall over refreshments. We look forward to catching up with you in person at that time. With the planning mostly done, or left in capable hands, I will now take some time to go to Apollo Bay to recharge, refresh, reflect and reminisce and find God's grace for the days ahead. I will not be able to answer emails for the remainder of this week. Once again, my gratitude for how you have walked alongside with love, care and practical support. Today we received some news from the field which we ask you to mention in prayer at your church. _____ Prayer of Thanksgiving. Two of our missionaries, were involved with motorbike accidents. * Sunny Maida was involved in a motorcycle accident with tractor and escaped with minor injuries with a fracture to his hands. He is safe. The motorcycle is damaged, but insured for repair and replacement. * Last month Suresh Mahile was also involved in an accident and had his leg fractured, but recovered well. We thank our Lord for saving our workers with minor injuries. The team on the ground prays for the safety of the workers every morning. God in His mercy helped on several occasions for our workers and family to escape with minor injuries. A collision with tractor and trucks can easily end up in death or major injuries for motorcyclists. Please thank God for his safekeeping and continue to pray that the G.O.S.P.E.L. work will not be disrupted through physical injuries. _____ Bert Kuipers * 11 Heritage Rise, Riverside, TAS. 7250 Australia ( +61 (03) 6327 3058 0438 343101 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
