The bulletins mail list is now intended for any general CRCA matters including discussions. Saying that, it is intended to have an area on the new website for discussions. > > The SIC made the decision, based on recommendations I put forward. It was discovered the numerous mail lists shared approximately a 95% common list of subscribers. These lists were rarely used, for example the discussion list received approximately one posting per month and was contributed to by the same 4 or 5 people. The time required to manage and moderate each list just isn't justified for the minimal use. The mailman software for these mail lists is quite old and primitive in terms of security so attracts a lot of spam. It is my hope to completely abolish the use of this software and integrate much more secure and engaging forms of communication, which gives our subscribers much greater choice of what they wish to interact with. > > Cheers > Phil On 25/02/2013, at 4:09 PM, mins at crca.org.au wrote: > Geoff, > > I can't remember who said it, for my forgetory is working better these days, but someone at Classis meeting last Saturday said it was closed down. It has recently been suggested that we do a couple of things differently, namely: 1) That it should be specified that nominators should always gain permission from the person they wish to nominate before putting their name forward to Session. 2) That if someone is nominated and Session decide not to put them up for election, that Session should go back to the nominator and the nominee and explain why their nomination was rejected. We are wondering if anyone has any experience, thoughts or wisdom for us on this matter? Yours in Christ, Jack Kapinga. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We all know that training events can have varied outcomes: what works for one does not always work for another. While Advance Together has come about following feedback from the CRCA congregations, we may still be wondering what to expect, and whether to attend. Here in Perth, Advance Together saw about 80 people attend. They came from all walks, represented all types of ministries and age groups: Small Group leaders, youth leaders, children's ministry people, Pastors, pastoral carers, and others who just want to see the church do good ministry. Murray Capill (Principal, RTC Geelong) started the day with a powerful sermon, encouraging and challenging us to a scriptural understanding of discipleship. It's fair to say that most were challenged by the message, and they left with a deeper appreciation for Matthew 18 and what it says about following Jesus. There were also workshop/electives on Small Group ministry, Pastoral Care, Mission and Leadership. One woman from Gateway who is just starting a new children's ministry. She attended the Leadership elective and found it terrific. I attended the Pastoral Care elective, and was impressed with the desire of those in the group to really do pastoral care well, and how the group grappled with the challenges of growing healthy pastoral support systems. A young woman who attended the Small Group workshop said the workshop looked at Scriptural priorities for small group ministry, and that she was really encouraged through the discussion. A couple attending the Mission elective were challenged to think about how they could change the way they talk with others, and look for better opportunities to share the message about Jesus. An older man, whose congregation did not have a strong small group ministry found the discussion particularly helpful. Over the lunch break, there was a noticeable buzz of conversation. The sense of being a collaborative community seeking to grow into good ministry was palpable. After lunch, people gathered into congregation specific groups and processed what the morning sessions. The Gateway group felt very positive about the day, with all workshops and all speakers being roundly appreciated. Our people left feeling better equipped for ministry. Some had connected with others involved in similar ministries in other congregations. Best of all, we had shared group discussion of the needs of our church and had identified a few things we could start doing immediately. We prayed for our church, asking God to deepen our dependence on him as we sought to develop good ministry. I am not normally someone who loves giving away my Saturday. Life is busy enough. But Advance Together was a great day. Just to see Gateway's ministry people encouraged and feeling more enabled in their task did me good. At another level, it was great how RTC, the Ministry Development Coach, the Youth Worker and Children's Worker, along with a local WA-CRCA speaker, had collaborated to deliver some excellent training. It seems to me that over recent years (perhaps the last 10-20 years) there has been a shift in thinking on these matters. I guess the "ideal" would be for the nominator to receive permission from the one being nominated before forwarding their names to Session. This would prevent delays in the election process for if there were no objections by session to his nomination and he was duly elected by the congregation he would probably accept his election to office. The draw back is that over recent years for various reasons more and more people are unwilling to stand for the offices in the church. Some have possible legitimate reasons, (i.e. involved in other ministry work already - School Boards, Rotary clubs) whilst others see the whole call to office and serving in the Session far to onerous on their time and their families time and hence refuse to be nominated. The difficulty with nominating someone only when you have received their permission seems to me to leave out the 'call' that the Lord of the church may send to someone to serve. It seems to be 'easier' to say 'no' to one individual's approach to be nominated, where as the 'call' to serve in office would be far more 'weighty' if a whole congregation made that call by a vote. Regarding explaining to a nominator why their nominations were not put forward to the congregation is fraught with danger. It may perhaps appease a nominator, but there may be reasons only known to the Session why a nomination has not been put forward and those reasons may of such a pastoral nature that it is unwise to divulge reasons to the nominator, more over it may be a confidential matter. So I would suggest, that to give reasons to a nominator for someone's failure to be put forward to the congregation doesn't need an explanation. People just need to trust the office bearers' judgment on these matters. Perhaps one other thought. The difficulty with our system is that a leadership team (Session) may only wish to have certain 'types' to be put forward so as to maintain a current direction or emphasis and to have someone come on board whom they know may be a descending voice could be problematic and slow down whatever 'vision' or 'five year plan the Session has adopted. I guess people could always vote 'no'. Anyhow, they are a few of my initial thoughts. John Z. We do what you do, as well as the two suggested amendments. The reasoning behind the first point is that it just seems like good manners for a nominator to get the nominee?s consent before their names will be put before Session and discussed (and possibly dissected!). It also potentially saves time: there seems no point discussing a nominee at length and eventually accepting their nomination, only to them have them refuse to accept it themselves when they are informed of it. The reasoning behind the second point is that: if the nominee doesn?t know they?ve been nominated, of course, there?s no point in telling them they were and then rejected. But if they do know they?ve been nominated, it is much better that they find out in person from an elder than merely by the fact that their name isn?t on the voting slip. This also provides pastoral opportunities, i.e. to explain to someone who might think they are leadership material why they are not, which might have broader impacts in the church. Anyway, that?s just my two cents? worth! We give thanks to the Lord for the success of our website ministry with 150-200 downloads of material per month, mostly sermon materials. Already this month there has been 322 downloads of which 187 are sermon materials. Blessings in Christ Geoff van Schie Theme of Series: The church facing total destruction under persecution from Satanic and worldly powers, is called to lift it's eyes and see Christ, triumphant over all His enemies and all powerful for the Church. "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." (Revelation 1:17-18) In Christ, the Church has nothing to fear for He watches over His bride and will crush her enemies. "I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords." (Revelation 19:11-16) At God's appointed time, Christ will return victorious to take the Church, His bride, to be with Him forever. "Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: "Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear." (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.)" (Revelation 19:6-8) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Each year it takes a few weeks for our student numbers to settle. We now have 47 people enrolled in RTC courses, and another 20-30 taking courses through Sola. Of the 47 RTC students, 19 are full-time and 34 are studying on campus. Nearly half the students are enrolled at M.Div level. We are thankful to God for the students he has given us and pray that their time at the RTC will equip them in a great way for their future service of God. Faculty News ? Murray Capill has just been in WA for the weekend, participating in the Advance Together conference. This is a collaborative project of the CRCA Ministry Development Coach, and the Youth and Children's workers, along with the RTC. The one day event was a great opportunity to encourage and strengthen churches in their disciple making ministries. The conference will also be run in Victoria on 27 April, Queensland on 18 May, and NSW on 15 June. For more info, go to: http://www.rtc.vic.edu.au/Calendar/Events/Advance-Together ? For details see: http://www.rtc.edu.au/Resources/News/New-Zealand-visit Book Recommendation (by Dr Phillip Scheepers) Strangers Next Door: Immigration, Migration and Mission by J. D. Payne (IVP, 2012, 206 pages). As Christians we are called to have a vision as wide as the world. With this work J. D. Payne effectively reminds us that 'the world' can sometimes be right on our doorsteps. Payne uses the first part of his book to place immigration and migration in kingdom perspective before going on to discuss the history of migration and the way in which it has changed western societies over the past few decades. He also analyses the characteristics of different types of 'people on the move' (e.g. refugees and students). The most valuable part of the book, in my opinion, is where he brings all of this data together in order to formulate some guidelines and strategies for reaching 'strangers' next door. In the process he encourages individuals and congregations to ask some searching questions about how they can be more effective in cross-cultural witness. This is not only a matter of local importance. Payne constantly cites examples of how effective Christian witness in the West has had significant positive outcomes in the countries of origin of a variety of migrant groups. Cross-cultural witness to migrants could therefore be viewed as an integral part of the global mission of the church. I highly recommend this book to church leaders and individuals who are keen to think through the implications of being Christ's witnesses in our multi-cultural society. Visit of Dr Michael Goheen [Description: Description: https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR95Dh_X1ERCcsfWIkQXpmqt0AfjhIVCH8WG8dzQGYVyjcJmUyb]Michael Goheen is the new professor of missiology at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids. For seven years prior to this he held the Geneva Chair of Worldview Studies at Trinity Western University and also taught missions at Regent College. Michael will be visiting Australia in May to address the pastors and church leaders of the Christian Reformed Churches of Australia. Before that he will visit Victoria to speak on the importance of a Christian Worldview for the Christian's life in society. He will be speaking in Melbourne on the evening of May 1st, and at the RTC at midday on May 2nd. If you are nearby you are warmly invited to attend. Michael has written two significant works on mission: A Light to the Nations: The Missional Church in the Biblical Story (Baker, 2010) and As the Father Has Sent Me, I am Sending You: J.E. Lesslie Newbigin's Missionary Ecclesiology (Zoetermeer, 2000). He has also co-authored three books touching on Christian worldview with Dr Craig Bartholomew. These are: Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story (Baker, 2004), Living at the Crossroads: An Introduction to Christian Worldview (Baker, 2008), and The True Story of the Whole World: Finding Your Place in the Biblical Drama (Faith Alive, 2009). We are pleased that Michael has agreed to speak to us on this area of his expertise. For further information consult the RTC website at www.rtc.edu.au Dr Scheepers' Trip to India [cid:image006.jpg at 01CE2562.5EEC4BD0]Towards the end of last year I had the opportunity to be involved in a conference for church planters from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. These church planters work in very difficult circumstances and most of them have very little training. A local Presbyterian missionary organises week-long conferences to give them some much needed time away from the demands of ministry and to provide them with training. I spoke on Apologetics, Ministry to Muslims and Theology of Mission. It was a great joy to see the enthusiasm of these brothers for the work to which they have been called and to hear their stories of how the Lord is growing his church in India. After the conference I also spent some time at the 'Grace and Truth' Bible College near Tambaram south of Chennai (Madras). My lectures there focussed on the same topics that I dealt with at the conference and it was wonderful to interact with a group of very keen students on these issues. I was also impressed to see that the college has many students from other Indian states and even from other countries in the region (Nepal, Burma and Myanmar). I am very thankful to have had this opportunity to serve the Indian church and would like to urge all of you to pray for God's people there as they seek to serve Him in the midst of a society where preaching the uniqueness of Christ is perceived as deeply counter-cultural. Ministry Spot (by Dr Murray Capill) Last Month, in writing about the place of discipline in the Christian life, I observed that while godliness requires discipline, discipline does not automatically lead to godliness. It only leads to godliness when our discipline is focused on bringing us into relationship with Jesus Christ. Discipline is needed to place ourselves in the current of God's grace and foster fellowship with Christ. And it is that alone which leads to our growth in grace. Relationship, of course, is always cultivated by communication. To build relationship with another person we need to spend time with them, talking and listening to each other. Similarly, to build relationship with God we need time talking and listening to him. That is why prayer and Bible reading surface as the two most foundational spiritual disciplines. We must be careful, however, to think of these two disciplines relationally not mechanically. When I think mechanically, I say to myself, 'I should do my Bible reading; I should spend more time in prayer.' It's a duty, a responsibility, maybe even a chore. But when I think relationally my whole perspective changes: 'I want to spend some time with God. There is so much I need to talk to him about, and I need to hear him speaking to me, giving me renewed perspective on life.' It is, of course, an enormous privilege to spend time with the eternal God. It is one of the foremost blessings of the gospel that we, with our all sin, messiness and confusion, can come to God and call him 'Dad', relating to him personally. Because of the work of Christ we come to him just as we are, not needing to formulate perfect prayers, but simply talking to him in the most real terms about where we are at, our sins and struggles, the things we sense we need, the concerns that burden us, the people and situations we care about, and the good things we are thankful for. Prayer is designed for ordinary, messy people, who get distracted while praying and put together confused prayers that jump all over the place. If relationship with God was easy and natural we wouldn't have needed a mediator like Jesus, or the interceding groans of the Holy Spirit, or the commands of Scripture urging us to prayer, or the simple model of prayer given by Jesus. The Bible gives us every encouragement and opportunity to come to God with all our 'stuff' and ask for his help. I was helped in thinking about this by some addresses on prayer I heard at the beginning of the year, given by Dr Gary Millar, Principal of the Queensland Theological College (they can be found here: http://www.taschristianconvention.org.au/talks/). In a seminar session he spoke of two questions that are a great way to begin time with God each day. First, ask yourself, 'How am I going?' Reflect on where you are at in life and with God. Write a paragraph answering that question, being very honest before God. Then talk to him about the realities of your life. Second, ask, 'What is God saying to me in his Word?' Read a passage of the Bible and allow God to speak to you. Then write down what you understand his Word to be saying. That will most likely prompt further prayer. The simple practice of writing a few sentences each day about how you are going, and a few sentences about what God is saying to you in his Word, is a powerful tool for cultivating relationship with God. For those of us in ministry there is a danger that whenever we turn to God's Word we find a message for other people. We see a sermon, a bible study, an article. But we will not grow spiritually if we are not hearing God speak to our own hearts. We need to read the Bible to ponder what God is saying to us. We need to hear him challenge us, teach us, encourage us, reprimand us. And we want something to stick, so that as we continue our day, biblical truth is on our mind. That's why distilling a truth and writing it down is helpful. Around the disciplines of prayer and Bible reading there are other disciplines that God's Word commends: meditation, fasting, Scripture memorisation, in-depth Bible study, and so on. The Bible gives few rules concerning how to do these things so we are free to experiment with what helps us grow in our relationship with God. What works for one person may not work for another. You don't have to have a morning devotion; you don't have to close your eyes to pray; you don't have to spend a set amount of time with God. But you do have to develop some disciplines, otherwise your relationship with God will not develop. Once we have formed some useful disciplines we begin, perhaps not immediately but over time, to experience the enormous blessings of walking with God each day. Relationship with him has a way of re-ordering our messy minds, putting things in perspective, taking the focus off us, lifting from us some burdens, renewing our hope, refreshing our more godly resolves, cleansing our souls from the filth of sin, and spurring us on to godly living. By myself I cannot grow in godliness, but by spending regular, intentional time with the holy God I come under the powerful influence of his renewing grace. The discipline of 15, 30 or 60 minutes with God proves to be the most rewarding time investment of the day. The measure of our devotional life is whether it has turned from being something I should do to something I want to do. But significant as cultivating personal relationship with God is, it is not sufficient for a healthy spiritual life. We are designed to know God in community, so next time we will consider the place of corporate spiritual disciplines. ________________________________ Reformed Theological College 125 Pigdons Rd, Waurn Ponds, 3216 Ph. 5244 2955, email: admin at rtc.vic.edu.au ________________________________ Please forward this email newsletter to others who may be interested in it. Message-ID: Dear partners in the gospel, A s you know Synod affirmed the work of the Church Planting Taskforce (CPT), and made provision for the ongoing funding of church planting across the denomination by setting aside a prescribed offering for the work. In a separate communication from the CPT all churches will be asked to hold this offering on Pentecost Sunday, 26 May 2013, when we remember that Christ sent his Spirit into the world to enliven the mission and build His church. This is an appropriate Sunday to focus on the work of church planting and the missional task God has given to the church. Giving sacrificially for the work of church planting is important, but a greater task is the task of prayer. For this reason the "Fourfold Task" adopted by Synod 2006 begins with prayer. As churches we are urged: "To call upon God for such an outpouring of his Spirit that his people will be assured of his love through his Word, seek to please the Saviour in all things, manifest the godly life and be filled with prayerful and sacrificial compassion for the lost in all the world." Prayer changes things. If we believe this, then we had better be praying that God will change the eternal destiny of our neighbours and country. In the seven weeks after Easter Sunday leading up to Pentecost, church and individuals are encouraged to pray for the work of the Gospel in Australia and beyond. To assist individuals and churches to focus their prayers in the days leading up to Pentecost, a "Prayer Calendar" has been put together beginning with Easter Monday and ending on Pentecost. The prayer items highlight the work of the gospel throughout Australia and beyond. There are several ways you use this prayer calendar: Duplicate the entire calendar (.PDF format attached) monthly newsletters, include it in your bulletin on Easter Sunday, 7 April, and/or post it on your website; Include the prayers for the week in your weekend services. Print the prayers for the week (.doc and PDF format attached) in your weekly bulletin and/or post it on your website, encouraging people to pray daily. Give a copy of the prayer calendar to your prayer teams and/or pray through each item at the meeting of sessions and/or elders. I magine your church, filled with God's Spirit, being of one mind and one body as it brings its life into line with God's great purpose of restoring the world under the lordship of Christ. Imagine every one of your church's members fully committed to seeing God's purposes become a reality. May God hear our prayers, may his Kingdom come, and may each one of us and our churches be filled with a sacrificial compassion for the lost in all the world. Our deacons are seeking some clarification and they have asked me to write a brief email asking for some further clarification. Our Good Friday offering (as well as our Christmas Day offering) are always for "empty hands" (WD&R), specifically filling the hands of those who can assist those who are in need of food, clothing and shelter etc. However, we haven't received any information about that side of the WD&R work. We did receive all the information about GOSPEL and the need for extra funding so that there can be an increase in Church Planting in India. Is this now part of the 'developing' strategy of the WD&R? We also see that this Church Planting work in India be a focus of our prayers on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. So the question is whether our WD&R offering on Good Friday (and Christmas Day) has now become a "Church Planting" offering rather than filling the hands of those who can assist those who are in need of food, clothing and shelter etc. If you could give us some further clarity on this matter, I am sure that our deacons will appreciate it and will be able to give a more informed recommendation to our members. Blessings on your ongoing work. John Z. On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, wrote: > ** > *G.O.S.P.E.L. News.* > Today you will receive our 2012 annual report directly from our mission > field. When I sent today's email, I was clearly wearing the GOSPEL hat. GOSPEL is and remains an "opt in" indigenous church planting work in Central Western India. Synod has endorsed this work much like SIW, Bethesda etc. The GOSPEL committee wants to make this ministry to be well known and since we are part of GROW, we feel very comfortable to ask for prayer in the CRCA. At Christmas and Easter time the churches are asked to give an offering for WD&R. Annually churches give 3 offerings to WD&R. This is not an "opt in" ministry of our denomination. It is not a church planting work at all. It is clearly diaconal. We always covet your prayers for the needs in this hurting world. I do hope these point help to clarify any misunderstanding. Let me say again that there is no developing Church planting strategy of WD&R. The mandate and work of WD&R is clearly development and relief in Asia and Pacific. God bless you and the work of your church and the ministry of mercy. Dear partners in the gospel, A s you know Synod affirmed the work of the Church Planting Taskforce (CPT), and made provision for the ongoing funding of church planting across the denomination by setting aside a prescribed offering for the work. I think it is important to realise that members of the congregation actually can not "nominate" a person for eldership. Only the session can do that. Members of the congregation can only suggest names to the session of people they believe are suitable to serve as elders /deacons, and then the session can chose to nominate them or not. Before formally nominating a person (i.e announcing their name to the congregation) the person being considered for nomination is visited by their section elder or the minister to talk about what is involved, and whether there are any things which the session might not be aware of, which would preclude the person from serving as an elder/deacon. Sometimes, congregation members suggest names of people who may think that they are suitable for nomination, but the session may be aware of things which would make it wrong or unwise, and therefore not pursue the suggestion. The reason may be one that the session would deem inappropriate to share with the person who suggested the name. If the ordinary member of the congregation approaches a person, wanting to nominate them for elder, many a suitable person would be too modest and say no. But if the elder or pastor approaches a person and informs them that the whole session is of the view that they have the necessary gifting and maturity etc, then the "call" would be much stronger, and not so easily declined. I think the method that I have outlined above has been widely used in our churches (certainly in the churches I have served) and has worked well . We do what you do, as well as the two suggested amendments. The reasoning behind the first point is that it just seems like good manners for a nominator to get the nominee's consent before their names will be put before Session and discussed (and possibly dissected!). It also potentially saves time: there seems no point discussing a nominee at length and eventually accepting their nomination, only to them have them refuse to accept it themselves when they are informed of it. The reasoning behind the second point is that: if the nominee doesn't know they've been nominated, of course, there's no point in telling them they were and then rejected. But if they do know they've been nominated, it is much better that they find out in person from an elder than merely by the fact that their name isn't on the voting slip. This also provides pastoral opportunities, i.e. to explain to someone who might think they are leadership material why they are not, which might have broader impacts in the church. Anyway, that's just my two cents' worth! Cheers, Des Smith, CRC Kingston On 18/03/13 2:08 PM, "mins at crca.org.au" wrote: Hi Everyone, In Launceston Session we have always followed what I thought was fairly standard procedure when it comes to nominating office bearers, that is we call for nominations from the congregation, we receive some names in reply, we add some extra names of our own, we consider them carefully and prayerfully, we come up with a list of candidates and then we announce this to the congregation.
