Teaching children well.

Children's minsitry leaders need to be trained well; especially in their understanding of the Christian faith. Why? Because teaching children can be harder than teaching adults.

John Piper put it this way in his message, 'Are we hindering Children from Coming to Jesus?'

It takes as much or more understanding of a biblical doctrine to teach it to children than it does to teach it to adults. If you understand a thing well, you can usually make it plain for ordinary people and children. But if you are fuzzy in your own understanding, you will generally be overly complex in your explanation.

A great hindrance to the salvation and the growth of our children is the weakness of our own grasp of the full range of biblical truth and the unity of the whole counsel of God. I am overwhelmed at what children can absorb and retain when they are repeatedly and systematically and progressively instructed in the great doctrines of the Bible.

The truth of this has been borne out to me many times as I've struggled to teach a truth to a child and realised that the problem was my own lack of understanding. More seriously, there have been times when I've heard things taught to children that have not been accurate, because the teacher did not know how to present the truth in a way that children could understand.

It would be helpful for keaders to get together and to take time to discuss how to convey accurately the truth of the gospel.

What words would you use to teach the following truths to a child? Be specific by imagining that a child had asked a question or you were teaching it in a lesson.

Justification by faith.

Original sin and sharing Adam's guilt.

The trinity

Sacrifices in the old testament.

Repentance.
