What to look for in Sunday School material

1. Is it Biblically sound.
Being Biblically sound is more than having a memory verse or a Bible passage. Ask yourself; Is the lesson in keeping with the overall message of the Bible and the particular point the passage is trying to convey? We do the Bible and our children a disservice when we lay aside a story's clear message for another. For example, today many children's curriculums downplay the Biblical world view of sin and salvation for talk about self esteem and human potential.

2. Is the presentation faithful to the whole tenor of the Bible as the Word of God? Cute talking animals, cool dudes and silly illustrations can undermine the simple, serious message of the Bible.

3. Is it Christ centred.
Children's curriculum often falls into the trap of moralism where the main point becomes 'do this or don't do that.' Does the 'bottom line' draw children to faith in Jesus, or just tell them what to do?

4. Is it 'educationally' sound and suitable for the children's ages? Does it touch the multiple dimensions of a child's life. Some material is one dimensional; all head knowledge. Or is it balanced and well rounded to touch a child's head, heart, hands and the way they live as a member of the community?

5. Is it creative and interesting  and does it try to reach children through many different learning styles. Some materials rely too heavily on work sheets, videos, colouring pages and craft. For example, has your material ever used music or movement to help convey the Biblical message?

6. Is it comprehensive over time and does it touch on a range of different and interesting subjects.

For good reasons that fulfil these requirements the CRCA recommends Faith Alive material. CRCA Resources stocks a range of currriculum suitable for churches with multiple needs. Ordering is flexible. Get an overview of what is available  here.
